Paper Mache in French is ‘chewed paper’. The history of Paper Mache can be traced back to ancient Egyptian coffins, Japanese and Indian armour and shields, and for decorative purposes in the middle and far east. Paper Mache first entered Europe when it was used for architectural , ornamental and decorative purposes.

Paper Mache was also used in war time as fuel tanks, and once they were used up they were dropped from the aircrafts. Due to the creation of plastics and composites, Paper Mache is now mainly used for craft purposes

Despite the first handbags being designed to be small and tidy, this changed as popularity grew and women demanded bigger and more elaborate bags.
